WHAT IS COACHING?

What is Coaching?

Coaching in an ongoing collaborative partnership created to facilitate personal growth and awareness that leads to conscious choice, focused action, and a meaningful, rewarding lifeCoaching is a unique structured conversation between the client and coach with an agenda and overall framework.  The client is the one who’s in control of where the conversation goes and the coach is the “expert” who keeps the conversation within’ the established framework using models and other skill sets that he/she has been trained for with only the client's best interest in mind in order to work towards a desired outcome.

Coaching helps clients stay focused on the areas they're good at, and uses this momentum to better serve those areas that they want to change. There are many methods to learn how to do this and so far our clients have thrived in doing so. All they needed was a little initiative and a plan to do so. That's where we come in. It's amazing what happens when progress occurs in areas that they never thought it would. You want to talk about how their confidence builds through the momentum of the positive results they achieve? It just gets easier and easier, it just takes that first step. You may have already taken that step by contacting us.  Who knows? But it's worth exploring further.

Coaching is About Getting Results

Coaching is about bridging the gap between where you are today to where you want to go in your life. It is designed to create a safe and supportive environment where we're able to work together to discover your own natural talents and strengths in order to achieve the results you want.  We work to help you progress and transition forward.

Coaching becomes a truly meaningful force when both the coach and client have a willingness to "grant" power to the coaching relationship.  A good Coach is one who helps the client achieve a level of awareness that they didn't have prior to coaching.

The Coach powerfully attends and listens to the clients language, messages, overall feelings, moods, emotions, and together with the client facilitates a new strategy that challenges the client to escape their comfort zone and encourages a new plan of action in order to move them forward from where they seem "stuck" to where they ultimately would like to be.

The actual work occurs in between our sessions, and we use our time together to assess what's working, while filtering out what isn't, then adapting the current game plan for the upcoming week.

For the sports fans, I like to compare our coaching process to what a football team does after a game.  They recap and assess what's been working, then they eliminate the plays that aren't working well, and then establish a strategy and create new plays that may or may not work.  We won't know until we use them in the game situation.  In our coaching relationship, the "game" occurs when you're on your own for the week.   We then learn from the results.  These results give us experience.  From the experience we're able to see what's working or not.  There's no point of creating a strategy that's not conducive to your needs, and TOGETHER we work at creating your own personal playbook that's catered to your strengths.  If the starting Quarterback is injured, it wouldn't make sense to use the same plays with the backup if his skills aren't the same.  Plays need to be adapted around his strengths so that the plays are part of a good system.  If they're beyond his capabilities, then it's not a good strategy and ultimately the team won't win.  A good coach would make the necessary adjustments and in order to do so, he and the player had better be on the same page.

Who Can Benefit from Coaching?

Coaching is for people who are ready for results. It's for people who know they can perform at a higher level but have not been able to do it on their own. If this sounds like you, it may very well be time to seek help from a coach.

What Is An ADHD Coach?

An ADD coach is a professional trained to guide and support a person in overcoming the challenges of living with ADD at work, at school, and at home. Specifically, ADD coaches help their clients:

   1. Create structures and tools to stay on track
   2. Improve organizing skills & design new systems
   3. Plan projects, get clear on tasks and manage time
   4. Increase self-awareness
   5. Set and reach their goals
   6. Improve lifestyle habits like diet, sleep, & exercise
   7. Improve relationship and communication skills

Think of the coach in the same light as you would a personal trainer at a gym, a nutritionist for your diet, or an experienced
ADD tutor.  Someone who’s trained to help others better their lives, and help achieve various goals.

How Does Coaching Fit With My Other ADD Treatment?

ADD coaching nicely supplements the treatment you get from your physician and/or counselor. Since you'll talk to your coach often, he or she will have a realistic opinion about how well your ADD symptoms are being controlled. Your coach can help you identify apparent problems with your medication or other treatment so you can take useful feedback to your doctor or counselor.

Is ADD Coaching Different From Therapy?

ADD Coaching IS NOT psychotherapy. Instead of focusing on a person's past and emotional healing, coaching focuses on taking action so a person can move to where he or she wants to go in life. Some even work with a coach while they work with a therapist or counselor.

Therapists deal with the "whys"...why I did this? why did I do that?. Many people don't need a therapist to help them explore what is wrong, what they actually need is someone to help them progress in areas that they seem stuck.  At The Coaching ADDvantage, we deal with the "how" and the "what." What do you want to achieve? And how can you achieve it?. Plain and simple! If there are barriers in the way that affect this, then we tap into the "whys" if need be, but it's up to the client for us to go down that road.

How Does Coaching Work?

ADD coaching is a close, ongoing partnership. In a typical relationship, coaches meet with their clients by telephone 3 or 4 times each month for approximately 45 minutes to an hour.  Coaching sessions cover what's going on in the client's life with emphasis on challenges, opportunities, and strategies for success.

Does Telephone Coaching Really Work?

Yes, in fact telephone coaching works particularly well with ADD. Most people find telephone coaching less distracting than meeting face to face. Plus, it makes it easier to select a coach since he/she doesn't have to live in your area.  There are no underlying distractions that can deter from the coaching process (eye contact, body language, and other potentially distracting barriers).  It’s also easier to get to an appointment by dialing on the telephone, rather than traveling, dealing with traffic, and finding parking, etc.

How Do I Choose The Right ADD Coach?

Most coaches offer a get-acquainted interview. Use it to find out if you like the coach's personality and to learn if the coach has the training and background to help your situation. When evaluating, listen for clues that the coach understands ADD and how to work with it.  This “interview” is centered around learning more about the coach, and getting answers to all your questions and to find out all you can about if coaching is the right fit for you in what you’re trying to accomplish.  Once coaching begins, all sessions revolve around the client, and only the client.  Use this first call to find out all you can.
